Ready, Set, Genre!

We’ve made a decision! Our genre is…..drumroll……. a mixture of drama and sports. My group decided that we wanted to create a movie intro for a movie we would all want to watch and decided amongst a sports-based movie, and no we didn’t just decide this because it was Super Bowl weekend. Although we haven’t worked out the details, such as what sport the movie will be based upon or the characters names and other details, we know this is the genre we want to go with because it alludes to a simple, yet entertaining storyline and a creative freedom in developing a plan for our introduction.

After my group decided on our genre, we decided the next best thing to do was a bunch of research to guarantee we knew this genre inside and out, and what better way to do that than studying a great movie in the realm of the genre: one of my all-time favorites,“The Blind Side.” The intro to this film starts with a narration and establishes context for the film to follow. I believe creating context would be the correct goal for us to achieve in our film opening because it would help set in stone the storyline of our film. Right now we are thinking it can end in an injury to help se the pretext of the main character gaining strength and passion throughout the film. The reason we think this is a great theme and plot is because this genre, a mix between drama and especially sports, relies on the message of perseverance, and providing the context of an injury, much like “The Blind Side” or another great movie within this genre, “The Cutting Edge,” I think we can create a great product. With all this being said, I think we should try and replicate the theme and energy of this successful sports/drama film, and if that means copying some of its film techniques while still implementing many of our own original ideas, I think that would be the best idea of all.

Since we are not far enough into our final overall planning, we may decide to incorporate some other classic sub genres, such as romance or comedy, into our film, which could have an impact on how we format or the overall idea behind our film. I think this means that our next stop on this film opening train ride is working and smoothing out the refined details when it comes to the genre so we can begin real plans in terms of deciding upon which sport we want to base this on, as a dancer, I’m hoping dance, and filming and piecing together our introduction. See you soon!
