Time for Storyboarding!

Hey guys, I’m back for another quick project update. We have officially started our storyboard! This is a big deal because it is officially cementing all of our progress. It’s also the first time we’ve been able to visualize our piece actually coming together. This storyboard will be vital during the filming/ shooting process so we know what angles and shots to use, how to break up the filming, and what should be in the shot. This will also allow everyone in my group to be on the same page and settle any creative differences we have towards filming beforehand so filming can run smoothly. We haven’t finished storyboarding our piece yet, however we did finish the very beginning of the scene within the first setting of the soccer field.

In addition, we discussed the lighting we plan on using in our film opening. We realized that filming may prove to be difficult as we will most likely be filming this opening on a phone, rather than a high quality camera, but having good lighting will definitely help this small issue. Lighting really helps set the mood and allows the viewer to subconsciously feel a certain way. This being said, during the happiest moment of the opening, Gabriel playing soccer, there will be brighter colors and a lot of sunlight to illuminate the film. However, as the film progresses we plan on relying less on natural light and more on artificial light as the rest takes place inside a house. This lighting will be slightly darker than the previous setting because the darker room creates/ sets the stage for more of a dramatic scene, which takes place here between the parents and Gabriel. Then, the lighting of the last part of this scene in the opening will be fairly dark to help further symbolize the idea that Gabriel feels alone and upset. We will also probably try to utilize the color blue here as it typically represents sad tones. See you for the next step in our plan!

“Setting” Up Our Next Game Plan

Hi again! Most of my group’s planning involved modifying and adding specificity to our plot and other elements within it such as the characters and creating a script for the opening. However, since we started developing more specific details toward filming our actual opening itself, we started focusing on when and where it will occur. Since we all have pretty busy schedules we decided that Sundays would work best for everyone in order to have a good chunk of time to film. We also assumed because there are two settings used in the opening, we will probably need 2 separate times of getting together to film. This being said, we don’t want to start filming too early because we want to make sure we will be as efficient as possible when filming and this will only be the case if we have/ do enough planning over the next few weeks, such as storyboarding and deciding upon mise-en-scene elements. Also, since the first part of the scene involves our main character, Gabriel, playing soccer, we decided upon our setting for this part being in a park with a soccer field and net. Even though this setting seems like the obvious choice, it is definitely important to make this executive decision. We then plan on filming the rest of the opening in one of our houses to make it seem more natural and realistic. Having set up the setting for the film opening is definitely a relief. See you soon for the next move in our game plan!

Reaching our “goals”

And we’re back! Immediately, after we finalized our plot, we knew coming up with our script would be a breeze, so we decided to complete this aspect of our planning next. In doing so we decided to finalize different elements of our film, such as the characters and mise-en-scene, into developed dialogue.

Characters

We’ve established our characters' names and traits in writing our script. Our main character is Gabriel, nicknamed Gabe, who loves soccer and wants to pursue it in his future, however, his parents doubt this because soccer is not a reliable or successful enough career, so they believe he must improve his grades to get into a good college in order to do well in life. Because of this, there is an internal struggle developed in Gabriel making him question his confidence in his ability to play soccer and pursue it in real life, in addition to the struggle between him and his parents. The other character we are introducing in our film opening is Daniel, the side character who is our main character’s best friend. Although not much of his character is established in the opening, we do know that he is one of Gabe’s biggest supporters because he is watching him practice and cheering him on and looks concerned when Gabe says doubtful things about his soccer abilities or want to play it in his future simply because of the impact his parents have on him.

Mise-en-scene

Even though there are some notes in our script that describe what is happening motion-wise, emotionally, and physically during the opening, everything that is not a spoken line, we definitely have room to further develop our plan to include specific mise-en-scene elements within our opening. For example, we indicated how Daniel will look concerned when Gabe says the line, “I just don’t want to let my parents down.” However, there are still specific set design and instructions that we didn’t decide on yet or include in our script, such as what our characters will be wearing, so we will have to specify these small, but relevant details later and include them where they are needed on the script.

One of our main goals when creating our script was to establish the character and some of the general types of conflict the main character will receive throughout the entire film. To do this we tried to rely much more on visuals and meaning created by camera shots and angles, acting, the mise-en-scene, and more rather than purely dialogue or conversation. Overall, we are really excited to see all the broad ideas we researched and discussed less than a week ago become specific details in the reality of a film opening that will be recorded and produced soon.

Kicking Off Our Detailed Plan!

Welcome back! After much preplanning and a bunch of ideas roaming around in our heads, we finally have some more specific information regarding our film introduction plot. We’ve decided that our story will follow this plot line of a struggling/ conflicted 18 yr old soccer player:

  • our player(main character) starts playing soccer but it’s just them practicing alone and they score a goal

  • their friend is watching and after says something all excited and proud like, “he shoots, he scores!!”

  • looks around and sees other kids and parents happy and proud of kids

  • feels upset but the friend consoles them

  • our main character goes home to parents who are just watching tv or something leisurely that to show they could have easily been there to support their kid but chose not to

  • some dialogue will take place here (a kind of argument between the main character and their parents about how soccer isn’t important/ he should focus more on school to get into college/ it’s senior year, can’t mess around)

  • main character storms out and goes in their dark room to symbolize sense of loneliness

  • either checks laptop to see application sent to top soccer school or email

  • House gets a call from the coach and the mom declines the call and lies about it to sabotage her son

We are hoping to include all of this in our introduction to help show the conflict of character v. character and character v. self, in addition to establishing our main character, who we’ve decided to name Gabriel (Gabe for short) and even their best friend character. Obviously, this is a fairly ambitious plot to communicate in 2 minutes, but we are definitely going to continue to plan out our time and the rest of the aspects of creating this opening to ensure everything not only runs smoothly but looks good in the end too. My group can't wait to plan more and keep you updated. I hope you’re as excited as I am. Talk to you soon!

Last Pre-plan Stop!

Welcome back! In my group’s planning process, today we focused on a very underrated, yet vital part of the planning process: determining our film’s target audience. A large part of our target audience largely comes from the name of the genre itself, sports fans. In addition, the target age group would be young adults, and since sports are generally geared more towards males, this would be more of a secondary target audience. Even more so, since our main character will more than likely be male, this further encourages/ pushes this secondary audience.

Another important thing we are starting to discuss, so we’ll be able to make a more detailed storyboard soon, is the camera shots and filming techniques we plan on using to create our film opening. In order to develop context, of the scenario and plot of the remaining film, we are definitely going to use numerous close ups of our main character and possibly of the key elements of the sport itself, such as the ball being kicked in soccer, in order to develop as much detail as possible. I believe we want to rely more so on our camera techniques, editing, and other aspects rather than dialogue to build up context. Another common editing technique we might try to utilize is an action match because it’s commonly used to help further portray action, which will be largely present as the opening will definitely feature some sort of sports, whether it be a practice or game. Other techniques we decide to use to further the success of our film opening will probably come to us as we continue the journey of developing this project. Be sure to stay tuned for more detailed planning soon to come!

Time for a Plot Pit-stop Analysis!

We’ve finally arrived at the plot station, where my group continues to analyze the plot of a sports drama movie, while applying certain attributes to our own plan for developing our own film opening. Referring back to “The Cutting Edge: Going for Gold,” the plot follows the story of the main character and athlete Jackie Dorsey after she must change her plan to become an ice skating Olympic competitor/winner after getting injured. She must find a partner to skate with, so once she comes across Alex Harrison, a pro-skater, but not on the ice rink, the pair must train and learn to compete together and well at that. Throughout the entire plot of the movie, the pair have major successes, losses, upbeat moments, moments they cannot stand each other and more; however, all of the plot and character emotions revolve around the sport, which is a key element to developing the plot of the film.

Although we aren’t 100% certain what our plot will be for our film yet since we are still in the early planning phases, we know we want to base it on something similar or of a similar trope respective to the sports drama genre. For example, although it is not the exact storyline described before, we were thinking of something along the lines of persevering past discouragement like disapproving parents and being told you won’t make it in that path of the sport our main athlete and character will play, such as soccer. My group and I think this would work because it sticks to the idea of a major dramatic conflict relating to the sport, and even incorporating some more lighthearted moments to entertain the audience and portray some comedic elements, pushing the element of plot even closer toward our token anticipated genre. That’s where the storyline ends for this chapter of our journey, but stay tuned because our final overarching planning stop is “technically” our biggest one yet and it’s targeted right at you!

First stop: Character

Time to get off the train and unload some of our ideas! Today my group decided to delve deeper into our specific genre and focus on how we are going to develop certain aspects of this genre. Today’s film aspect focus: characters.

In order to ensure we are getting as close to this genre as possible, I will look into specific films that were considered a success momentarily and numerically through viewers and ratings later, but for now, I’m going to talk about some general characteristics I’ve noticed in many of these sports/ drama films that feature elements of the comedy genre as what I would call an avid movie watcher myself. First of all there’s always a main protagonist who faces a sports related issue, typically an injury  or any obstacle that affects their ability to play their beloved sport. This character can be male or female, it doesn’t typically matter; however, the next most important side character or secondary main character is typically of the opposite gender to create more diversity and appeal to more audiences. These characters typically must work together to manage the sport they are playing and overcome the obstacle presented in the start. Also, a common trait of both of these characters is that they are great at their sport but also generally fairly cocky or overconfident about their athletic ability, sometimes even to the point that prevents a sense of unity or teamwork for the sport, which is another less obvious challenge they will have to overcome.  However, this secondary character isn’t typically introduced in the film opening, but it is always nice to have more than less research. Also, having more of the story figured out will make the project flow easier and have smoother connections in my groups’ work.

Let’s rewind a second and zoom back into “The Cutting Edge,” a movie I briefly mentioned by name in my last quick update. I’m going to break the sequel to this film down, “The Cutting Edge: Going for Gold,” for research purposes, analyze each component necessary for me to learn more to help contribute to this project, and then slowly piece each aspect back together to see the components that come together to make a successful film in the sports/ drama featuring comedy elements.

Since the first element I want to focus on is character, let’s analyze Jackie Dorsey, played by actress Christy Carlson Romano, the main character of “The Cutting Edge: Going for Gold.” She is friendly, easily annoyed, knows she’s a great skater, stubborn, open-minded, sarcastic, and one with a forgiving nature. All of these character traits are demonstrated through her commentary, dialogue, interactions with other characters, ability to successfully complete and thrive at her sport, ice skating, and more. When faced with difficulty she may make up her mind and be stubborn about the matter, being unwilling to budge from her perspective, until she uses her forging nature and wit to ultimately land at the morally correct and overall best for everyone solution. For example, Jackie is used to competing alone until she has an almost career-ending injury and realizes she won’t ever be strong enough to skate and compete individually anymore. Although she is originally opposed to the idea, she is eventually open-minded, talented, and mature enough to overcome this mental block and compromise on skating with a partner. There are plenty more examples, demonstrating Dorsey’s character, but this is just one prime one that reflects how the main character of this genre can influence the plot and easy recognition of the sports/ drama genre, with a hint of comedy. It’s time to get back on the train because this character pit-stop may be over, but don’t fret because the next one will be sure to develop our plot! See you soon!

Ready, Set, Genre!

We’ve made a decision! Our genre is…..drumroll……. a mixture of drama and sports. My group decided that we wanted to create a movie intro for a movie we would all want to watch and decided amongst a sports-based movie, and no we didn’t just decide this because it was Super Bowl weekend. Although we haven’t worked out the details, such as what sport the movie will be based upon or the characters names and other details, we know this is the genre we want to go with because it alludes to a simple, yet entertaining storyline and a creative freedom in developing a plan for our introduction.

After my group decided on our genre, we decided the next best thing to do was a bunch of research to guarantee we knew this genre inside and out, and what better way to do that than studying a great movie in the realm of the genre: one of my all-time favorites,“The Blind Side.” The intro to this film starts with a narration and establishes context for the film to follow. I believe creating context would be the correct goal for us to achieve in our film opening because it would help set in stone the storyline of our film. Right now we are thinking it can end in an injury to help se the pretext of the main character gaining strength and passion throughout the film. The reason we think this is a great theme and plot is because this genre, a mix between drama and especially sports, relies on the message of perseverance, and providing the context of an injury, much like “The Blind Side” or another great movie within this genre, “The Cutting Edge,” I think we can create a great product. With all this being said, I think we should try and replicate the theme and energy of this successful sports/drama film, and if that means copying some of its film techniques while still implementing many of our own original ideas, I think that would be the best idea of all.

Since we are not far enough into our final overall planning, we may decide to incorporate some other classic sub genres, such as romance or comedy, into our film, which could have an impact on how we format or the overall idea behind our film. I think this means that our next stop on this film opening train ride is working and smoothing out the refined details when it comes to the genre so we can begin real plans in terms of deciding upon which sport we want to base this on, as a dancer, I’m hoping dance, and filming and piecing together our introduction. See you soon!

The Plan is Coming Together

The portfolio project has various different elements that work in tandem to produce a cohesive, high quality film introduction as a product. With this in mind, I figured working with a partner or two would be best to help organize all aspects of this project. Also, since this project includes a lot of creative elements, having more than one person contribute ideas and opinions ensures the ending product is essentially more unique and applicable to the guidelines. My group’s first goal going into this project is to determine the genre of film we want to portray and then develop a plot/ storyline from there so we can determine what type of opening would best suit our film. With this in mind, we’ll do research on not only the genre, but also what techniques would best help to develop the type of film introduction we decide upon, such as establishing setting or characters. In doing so, we’ll be able to properly and more easily storyboard, film, and edit our introduction into a seamless piece. Throughout the entire process, I’ll also be blogging our progress, struggles, plans, and more to ensure my group’s process is fully detailed and illustrated and so that in the end we can review our timeline and see where we did great and maybe where some improvements could have been made. Stay tuned!

Music Marketing Blog Post #2

This project stemmed from one idea: research. After discovering our group would be a rock band, we thought it would be wise to complete our music research on bands and artists that stayed in this field and had a similar style and energy to our band. After finding groups that matched ours pretty well and were still relevant, such as the Arctic Monkeys and the Foo Fighters, we delved into research, honing in on their marketing strategies and how that sparked a connection with distribution strategies. One common factor that every group had in common was creating an image for themselves, so this is where we started the process of marketing our band. We first started with establishing an edgy energy/ vibe through darker colors, black and red, and creating a symbol/ logo involving these colors, fonts, and images to represent our band and make it recognizable.

After creating the basis of our group’s image, we had to figure out one of the next most important aspects of the plan, creating a target audience and cementing all of our marketing campaign, techniques, and style towards this target audience so it would be as effective as possible. Our research showed that a majority of not only rock genre listeners, but to the specific 4 bands we completed our research on, in which our band was directly styled after, are comprised of young adults and teens. With this in mind we knew social media would play a vital role in our campaign, whether by means of distribution or promotion. For example, since our targeted audience is very involved and heavily relies on social media we decided to create a Twitter and Instagram account, since these are two of the most widely used platforms, to inform and create a more personal connection with our audience through visuals and text. Also, since vinyl and records are making a comeback amongst this generation we decided to include that as well. In addition, teens and young adults typically tend to enjoy when products are easily attainable or accessible, so having a one stop shop with all of our music, information, upcoming events, merchandise and more, also known as our website, was a vital emergent of our marketing plan when it comes to being influenced by the target audience.

Another key part of the marketing strategy we found in our research was creating merchandise and easy access to the band’s music and developing personal connections via a personal website and large social media presence. In addition, in our research, such as the Foo Fighters, these bands utilized the idea of a limited opportunity window and prizes in order to lead to spreading the word about their band. With this in mind, I brainstormed ideas and examples of how we could take the base of our marketing strategy and exemplify these more unique and creative methods. In doing so, we came up with having merchandise to accompany our tour that would only be sold for a limited time and holding a surprise pop up concert for one special fan. We decided upon these because besides the clear benefit of promoting the band, each accomplished other underlying goals, such as developing a deeper personal connection with our audience, promoting our future tour for our band, and increasing profits.

The next step, once coming up with and actually creating our plan, was developing our music video. We decided that a storytelling and promotional hybrid video would be the most effective in raising awareness and promoting our band, since we were focused on developing an image for our band and wanted to do so through creating a mood with our video. After listening to our given song, entitled “something from nothing,” we decided this title itself was the perfect message itself to send with the storytelling element: describing the story of someone starting from the bottom and persevering through obstacles to reach their goal and thrive in the end. This was probably the most challenging part of the entire process because we had many ideas but many of them were unrealistic in terms of filming them, such as showing the narrative of a singer who went from playing in the street to a stage. Once we finally came up with an idea, the story of a kid who wants to be a pro fighter/boxer but his parents inhibit him from doing so, until he gets invited to a huge fighting event from all of his progress one day. This was another struggle spot because I disagreed with some of my group members as they believed the video was complete, while I believed only a portion of the story was captured and there were very limited promotional elements included in the video. Although the video looked cool, I knew it was missing elements, which was difficult as I tried communicating this to my group members who didn’t feel the same way. After this struggle, regarding the production of the video, I eventually realized that the video served its purpose in creating the edgy vibe and image our band was going for, so I gave in a little on the video disagreement.

After all of the elements were completed, it was time to organize them into one informative presentation. We wanted a simple design that would still enable our band to be recognizable; therefore, we made sure to utilize our dark color scheme and incorporate simple designs and logos throughout every slide. We were able to easily distribute the work, so when it came time for the presentation, even though we all knew every inch of our marketing campaign, we made sure to speak on the aspects of the project we were most confident about to ensure we seemed less nervous, and more personable and approachable during the presentation.

I learned so many things from this project. Some general lessons were how to work as a team and distribute work while still being aware and overseeing what everyone is doing. However, I mostly learned about the music media genre due to my extensive research and placing myself in the shoes of a marketing team  themselves to make sure I not only knew but fully understood and placed myself in a real-life example of utilizing marketing and distribution techniques. I think this will aid me in my completion of the portfolio project because I’ve not only learned so much general information about the music media throughout my research, but also I’ve learned how multiple elements work and come together to create one seamless plan or campaign which will be vital when putting together my portfolio project as it contains many smaller elements that when joined together make a seamless piece of evidence that I’ve learned so much from this class and can demonstrate it through all the elements of my portfolio.
